AN INITIATIVE designed to help children discover the fascination of wildlife on their doorstep has been launched.

The Explorer Club has been set up by the North York Moors National Park Authority.

It aims to introduce primary school children to the different habitats within the area and conservation with activities such as tree planting and leaf identification.

It aims to build on the success of the park’s Hedgehog Club for pre-school children and their parents, which teaches tots about the wildlife in the park through stories, crafts and songs.

Families taking part will be able to work towards gaining the John Muir Discovery Award. The environmental award encourages people of all backgrounds to enjoy and care for wild places.

Also under the initiative, families will be selected from schools in and around the park to take part in specific projects on the moors.

They will be given free transport into the park under the volunteer service minibus and fun activities to do at home. Where possible, experts from other organisations such as the National Trust will be involved.

Tammy Andrews, the Explorer Club co-ordinator, said: “This is a great opportunity for families to get out and about in the park.

“They are able to spend quality time together while exploring, discovering and caring for the environment.

“It is wonderful to work with such an enthusiastic group.’’
