A FORMER seamstress whose life has taken in two world wars and the birth of space flight has celebrated her 101st birthday.

Lilian Evans, of Cherry Garth Care Home, in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, enjoyed a party with family and friends on her birthday on Wednesday, January 2. 2.,Family and friends travelled to Thirsk to enjoy a party at the care home.

Lesley Cotterill, team manager at Cherry Garth, said: "It’s quite an age and a great achievement.

"Cherry Garth’s dining room was adorned with flowers, party decorations and cards from well wishers.

"Everyone gathered for a birthday tea to mark this great achievement and to share in her special day."

Mrs Evans, nee Smallwood, was born in Walsall, in the Midlands, in 1910.

She was the oldest of four girls in a family of ten children and upon leaving school she worked as a seamstress.

She met married Reginald Evans, a railway goods guard, in December 1938 and the couple had one son Graham born in 1946.

Following the death of her husband in 1990 Mrs Evans moved to Taunton, in Somerset, to live with her son and his family.

She then moved to Bedale, North Yorkshire, in 1990 to be nearer her relatives who had moved and in 2009 and several years later moved into Cherry Garth.
