MORE than 20 children currently awaiting adoption in Middlesbrough, figures have shown.

An urgent appeal has been launched in order to help these children, and others, find new families as the demand for adoption increases throughout the country.

The appeal is being launched as part of National Adoption Week, which started on Monday and aims to increase awareness of the need for adoptive parents to come forward. Figures revealed the need for adoptive families across England and Wales increased by 6 per cent in 2011 to 4,734.

Councillor Mike Carr, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Children, Families and Learning, said: "What we really need are people who can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life. People who can help a child recover from the reasons why they came in to care and can help them go on to thrive in a new family.

"Initially, we are simply asking people to come forward and find out more about adoption. If you think you might have what it takes, please pick up the phone today."

He added: “"It's important to stress that adopters can come from all walks of life and backgrounds - the key qualities are the skills to parent and support the young people who will become part of their family.”

A roadshow, set to arrive in Asda on Portrack Lane in Stockton on Friday, will see adoption social workers on hand to answer questions and help people find out more about adopting children.
