A NEW flag pole and flag has been installed as a tribute to the victims of war at the site of a 1941 German bombing raid.

Six Teesside-based companies paid for the new flag pole to be erected at the Garden of Remembrance on Coatham Road in Redcar.

The new flagpole was erected in time for the town’s annual Remembrance Day parade following a campaign for funding by Redcar and Cleveland Councillor Eric Howden.

He said: “It’s a magnificent gesture on the part of these companies and a reminder too that many people working in local manufacturing also made the ultimate sacrifice in the quest for peace.”

The flag was paid for by industrial companies Ensus, SABIC, Sembcorp, Huntsman, Lotte Chemical and GDF Suez, all based at Wilton.

Sembcorp’s Keith Kidd, a former member of the forces, wore his medals for the unveiling of the flag on Thursday, November 8.

He said: “It is a privilege and an honour to have been invited to represent the site companies at this special event.

"It is important that we remember the great service that is still being made by our armed services in conflicts today, as well as the sacrifices of those who took part in past conflicts.”
