RESIDENTS with external letterboxes are being advised to undertake a credit reference check after the emergence of a new type of credit card scam.

Two men have been arrested over the alleged con, which involves offenders repeatedly stealing letters from letterboxes in isolated locations, such as those at the end of driveways.

North Yorkshire Police said it was the first time they had come across the fraud in which offenders, who have targeted properties in numerous villages in the Northallerton area in recent weeks, use personal details printed on the junk mail to fraudulently apply for credit cards.

It is understood the fraudsters are aware of the number of days it takes banks to process credit card applications, and return to intercept the cards and PIN numbers shortly after they are delivered.

A postman for the East Harlsey area has reported seeing a black Renault Laguna behaving suspiciously in recent weeks.

Detectives launched an investigation after a couple from East Harlsey both received credit cards through the post which they had not applied for.

Since an appeal for information on social media and an alert being issued through the local Neighbourhood Watch group, three other victims of a similar scam, from Welbury, Ingleby Cross and Nether Silton, have also come forward.

As many residents would not notice the loss of junk mail or of credit cards they had not applied for, it is thought other properties may have been targeted.

Detective Constable Jason Roper urged residents, particularly of rural areas, who have external letter boxes to remain vigilant and consider the security of their mail.

He said: “If you suspect that you are a victim to call the police and also contact your bank or the issuing credit card company immediately.

“It may also be prudent to consider conducting a credit reference check through Experian or another company which offers a similar service to see if cards have been applied for in your name.

“I would also appeal to anyone who sees any people or vehicles acting suspiciously in their area to get in touch with the police or Crimestoppers with information.”

Two men aged in their 30s from Blackpool were arrested in Ellerbeck,  on April 9 on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

They have been released on police bail as enquiries into the incidents continue.
