CHILDREN are walking to the beat of their own drum thanks to new music workshops.

Youngsters at the Broadacres-run Fun Factory have been learning how to play African drums as part of the activities at the youth club in the grounds of Mill Hill School in Northallerton.

They have been receiving training from Drums Agogo, a group that provides hand-drum tuition on genuine African instruments.

Broadacres’ community involvement manager Emily Thomas said: “This has been something very different for the children who are really enjoying the workshops.

“We try to make coming to the youth club not only fun but educational as well and activities like these are a great way of introducing the children to new skills.”

Drums Agogo is the idea of Alison Lyon, who has been teaching drumming for over 11 years. She provides the African drumming workshops to schools, youth clubs and children’s organisations such as cubs, scouts, brownies and guides.

The Fun Factory is open to all children aged six to11 who live in Northallerton and is held every Tuesday night from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
