POLICE are warning van owners and tradespeople to be extra vigilant after a spate of thefts in the Thirsk and Sowerby area.

Valuable tools have been stolen from a number of vehicles in the area and officers want owners to make security a priority.

Over last night, September 10 and 11, seven vehicles were broken in to in Thirsk, Sowerby and Carlton Miniott.

They were mainly builders’ vehicles and the thieves stole tools that had been left inside.

PC Paul Southgate said: “It’s really important that vehicle owners are vigilant when it comes to the security of the tools of their trade. Please don’t ever leave any valuable items in your car overnight.

“It may seem an inconvenience to remove them following a long day at work, but unless you have a secure garage where you can lock up your vehicles, you risk being the victim of opportunist thieves who are on the lookout for easy targets.”

The thefts took place in Danum Avenue, Masonic Lane, Ripon Way, Cocked Hat Park, Admirals Court and Back Lane/Sandholme Lane.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity or vehicles in those areas during the night is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option two and ask for PC Paul Southgate. Alternatively email paul.southgate@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk or, to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555111.
