A POP-UP art gallery is to open in Richmond to raise cash for local causes – with an emphasis on helping those with disabilities.

Local councillor Linda Curran has been chasing suitable premises to create a temporary art gallery for some time, but thanks to the generosity of nearby Newton Solicitors she has been able to move into an empty shop, in Frenchgate.

The shop has been supported by the Showcase Gallery, in Finkle Street, and from members of the public who have donated artwork to sell.

Cllr Curran said: “My son had a disability and that is why we set up the Paul Curran Trust. Its aim is to give grants to children and young people up to the age of 25 to help them pay for things to improve their lives.

“We are also supporting the Richmondshire Museum, which has a lift for disabled access but it needs replacing; and St Mary’s Church, which is raising money for a disabled toilet.

“Disability charities often struggle to raise money so we want to raise some money and awareness of them.”

The gallery will officially open tomorrow from 10am until 4pm, and Cllr Curran hopes it will be open every day – but is appealing for volunteers to give any time they can.
