A NORTH Yorkshire department store has managed to raise thousands of pounds for a support group which helps women suffering breast cancer.

Barkers in Northallerton raised £750 at an afternoon tea event, which takes the amount it has raised over the past three years to £3,000.

Customers were invited to afternoon tea on Thursday (October 23) and proceeds from the event, which included a tombola, will be handed over to the Friarage Breast Cancer Support Group.

The group offers practical and financial support.

One young mother had taxi fares paid to take her children to school while she was undergoing chemotherapy, while the group paid kennel fees for one woman's beloved dog while she was in hospital having treatment.

Barkers womenswear buyer Jane Hunter said: "These ladies have been through a lot already and if we can help makes things slightly easier for them then that is very satisfying."

The Friarage Breast Cancer Support Group was formed by breast cancer patients more than 20 years ago.

Irene Boreham, secretary of the Friarage Breast Cancer Support Group, said: "When local companies like Barkers help us, we are very grateful for their support and it amazes us how generous people are.

"People need to know that we are there for them and they can turn to us for help."

Louise Sadler, specialist nurse in breast care at the Friarage Hospital, said the support group was available to all ladies who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Fundraising by the group has been invaluable, particularly in being able to offer small grants to ladies,” she said.

“For example, to assist in the purchasing of bras after surgery or paying for short term childcare for ladies struggling financially during treatment."
