A CHURCH is celebrating its 150th anniversary by running an Advent trail to encourage people to spend time in Northallerton shops and cafes – with the help of sheep.

Northallerton Methodist Church took its inspiration from the way sheep used to be driven through the High Street to market 150 years ago.

And members have knitted around 30 sheep characters that will be placed in shops, cafes, and businesses for people to find.

Knitter Margaret Hampson said they wanted to do something that would involve the whole community and hopefully encourage trade in the High Street.

She said: “The sheep trail will take place from December 1 to December 20, and will start at the library and end at the Methodist Church.

“The sheep won’t be in shop windows so people will have to go into shops and businesses to look around for them – we hope it’ll be a bit of fun.”

People can pick up leaflets with details of all the sheep there are to find in Mitchell’s Newsagent, Northallerton Library and the Methodist Church on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 10am until noon.

The leaflets cost 50p with all proceeds going towards the Hydro Duck Swimming Pool at the Dales School, Morton-on-Swale.
