A POIGNANT service to mark the introduction of a Remembrance Tree to the grounds of a Richmond funeral parlour was attended by civic dignitaries, church representatives and residents.

James Blenkiron, from John Blenkiron and Sons funeral directors, said the tree had been an idea of his family who wanted to create a focal point for the community to pay respects to loved ones at Christmas time.

He said: “It is a particularly poignant time for our family as our father, John Blenkiron, passed away at Christmas last year.

“We wanted a place for the whole community to go to remember family and friends at this time of year.

“Christmas is a time to celebrate with family, but also to remember loved ones no longer with us.”

The tree, a traditional Christmas fir, is in the garden of the funeral parlour in Queens Road, Richmond, and weather-proof cards will be available for people to write a message and hang on the tree.

Mr Blenkiron said: “The cards will be available in our office, or in an outside container out of office hours, and they can be left with us in the office to hang on the tree or can be done by individuals.

“The service of Dedication on Wednesday (December 3) was very moving, and attended by Rev Antony Kirby, curate at St Mary’s Church, Father Dan O’Neill from St Joseph and St Francis Xavier RC Church, and Deacon Joy Sykes from Richmond Methodist Church, as well as Richmond Mayor Cllr Clive World.

“We hope the Remembrance Tree will be a place for everyone to write their own personal messages, and that it will continue every year.”
