A CHOIR composed of enthusiastic amateurs has fulfilled an ambition by singing at St Paul's Cathedral.

Fifty members of Northallerton-based Unlimited Voices, which was established 15 years ago, performed a 30-minute a capella recital, including God So Loved The World and Cantata Domino before an audience at the 17th Century church after four full-day rehearsals.

Linda Metcalfe, who runs the group, formerly called Sing and Discover, from her home Thirsk Road, said she had been thrilled to sing at the second largest church in the UK, due to its history and acoustics.

She said: “It is a very special place for our singers to be - we were blown away by the history and majesty of the building.

"We sing in special places all over the world, such as in the Vatican in Rome, in St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, in St Paul’s Chapel in New York, but there is something unique about St Paul’s."

The North Yorkshire group has begun rehearsals for its next concert at Bridgewater Hall, in Manchester, where they will join singers from Manchester and Leeds for a 300-voice spectacular, singing the number one hits from the last 50 years.
