A MOTHER and daughter have scooped accolades at an international cake contest after impressing judges with their attention to detail.

Jennifer Lofthouse and her Sowerby Community Primary School daughter, Lilly, both received three silver medals at Cake International, in Manchester, for their sculpted novelty, Valentine's and children's category entries.

Self-taught Mrs Lofthouse said she had been overwhelmed by judge's compliments about her cakes, inspired by her mother-in-law, Susan Lofthouse, of Thirsk, who died suddenly last April, while returning home from the Dancing On Ice show at Newcastle.

Mrs Lofthouse, who launched her Darrowby Cakes business in 2013, said: "We are really excited about receiving the awards.

"The judge said she knew my cakes had an emotional attachment before she spoke to me.

"Susan was very proud of our cake decorating and I wanted to honour her."

She added Lilly, 11, had overcome stiff competition from aspiring bakers from across the country to land third place with her cake inspired by the hit movie Frozen.

"The judge was fantastic with Lilly and had lots of lovely things to say about her cake, including that it would have been good enough to enter in the teenagers' group, so we were extra pleased."
