A CHARITY that helps fight child poverty is calling for more volunteers to create a fundraising hub in Richmondshire.

Save the Children already has a strong legion of supporters in the area but now the charity is encouraging volunteers to come together to develop a local group.

Jen Birch from Save the Children said there are already around 500 individuals in the area who regularly fundraise or have campaigned for the charity, and that a previous Richmondshire branch had held many successful events before it was closed in 2004.

She said: “We know a traditional branch structure doesn’t necessarily suit the lifestyle of many of our supporters today – but the group support, hub of activity and visible local presence it provides can exist in other ways.

“We want supporters to feel more connected to the charity and the work they are helping to make possible in the UK and overseas.”

Ms Birch added that Richmond Golf Club already takes part in the annual Save the Children golf tournament.

Save the Children is also setting up a youth panel to bring together committed young volunteers, aged 18 to 25, in the UK to organise events and publicise work on social media.
