TEENAGERS are set to travel to Mexico to help build a house for a deprived family.

The members of St Oswald's Church Youth Group, in Sowerby, will spend five days of their Easter holidays constructing a home in Tijuana with the charity Urban Saints.

The 14 and 15-year-olds, who attend Thirsk School and Sixth Form, have spent months gaining sponsorship, washing cars and organising a range of events to raise £1,500 each to take part in the project.

Archie Sladden said he and the other volunteers were both excited and nervous about travelling to Mexico.

He said: "It is an adventure of a lifetime and we are proud to be ambassadors for our church, our school and for Thirsk and Sowerby.

"We have had a session with an experienced builder, who showed us how to use tools safely and to take good care.

"It might seem very different when we are out there in the heat of the sun, but we can’t wait to work together as a team and build a house for a family.”

To raise funds for the trip, the boys have organised a concert, featuring The Yorkshire Decibelles, in St Oswald's Church, Sowerby, on Friday, February 27, at 7.30pm.

For tickets to the The Sound Of Spring concert, which will also include readings and poems, cost £10 for adults and £7.50 for concessions, email pauline@stoswaldsowerby.org.uk
