A GROUP which helps vulnerable people to cope has been given a £354,214 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to extend services over the next three years.

The grant will help Hambleton, Richmondshire and Selby Advocacy, give free, independent and confidential services to people in need, particularly with bills and mail.

The funds are being used to set up a new project which will support vulnerable people for the long term.

A spokesman said: “The aim is to develop the skills and the safeguards needed to offer an ethical service that people can trust. We are very excited about this new project which complements our existing service.

“Our organisation has been providing much needed advocacy support to vulnerable clients for the last 19 years.

"Our services have been a lifeline for many but we are increasingly aware that people do not have the support they need to deal with the mail and bills that come through their door or into their inbox every day.”

The service is run by a board of trustees with volunteers helping staff work with people, particularly when they face major changes or difficult choices or need help dealing with issues.
