A STAINED glass window which featured in Ripon's first purpose built library is set to be displayed after being restored.

Colin Waite, who used the library in Skellgarths, said he had fond memories of the artwork above the entrance, depicting the torch of knowledge and enlightenment, and tracked down the developer who had bought the building in an attempt to save it.

After being given the window, which was adopted as an emblem for the library service, Mr Waite passed it to former senior library assistant Pat Rumbold, who took it to Askrigg-based stained glass restorer, Dave Wardman.

Mrs Rumbold and Mr Waite paid for the restoration work to be done before handing it over to fellow heritage enthusiast John Dawson, who made a wooden display board for the glass panel.

Mr Waite said: "The glass panel will be a great addition to the library’s display as part of Sights and Sounds of Ripon – Your Community, Your Ripon event on March 14.

"Once that is over the panel will be put on permanent display for all library users to see this link with the past.”
