AN OPERATIC society is celebrating after receiving sponsorship from a local caravan firm – giving the club a lifeline to safeguard its future.

Richmond Operatic Society has joined forces with Ropers Caravan World, based in Brompton-on-Swale, and the business has pledged to support the society to continue putting on two live performances a year in Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal.

The society, now in its 91st year, can also now make improvements and keep up the maintenance on it grade II listed building, the former Ebenezer Methodist Chapel in Bargate, Richmond.

Chairman of the society, John Holliday, said: “I’m delighted that Ropers have come on board with this venture.

“Knowing Roger Roper’s passion for music, being a bass guitarist in a few local bands, and also his commitment to local organisations, I was very keen for us to work together on this.

“Hopefully the agreement and advertising will benefit both parties and I look forward to welcoming the Ropers and their guests to our up and coming shows.”

The society is gearing up for its next show, the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Operatic Society's version of The Mikado.

Mr Holliday added: “It’s a kind of spoof version of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta.”

It runs from between Wednesday, May 20 to Saturday, May 23, at the Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond. For tickets call the box office on 01748-825252.
