TWO councillors who between them have served a town for nearly 50 years have been given special community awards on their retirement.

Mary Megson, has been a Bedale Town councillor for 33 years, fellow councillor Ellen Dunning has been a member since 1999.

They were both presented with the special awards at the Annual Parish Meeting in recognition of their valuable contribution to the community of Bedale.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Malcom Young said cllr Dunning had served for 16 years, two of them as Mayor. He added: ”The Council wishes to acknowledge her commitment to the best interests of Bedale and her enthusiasm and forthrightness in challenging and supporting town issues and projects.”

Cllr John Noone thanked Cllr Megson for her work supporting 18 different Mayor’s. He added:”Mary’s dedication and contribution to improving services and facilities is without precedent and the Council considers it fitting to acknowledge her efforts as she retires from her Town Council activities.”
