YOUNGSTERS have built a giant Lego city at school as part of a fun project as they study about the community.

The Great Smeaton Primary School pupils built the structure during a fun day on March 11 with the help of staff.

The 58 pupils and eight staff members joined together to make the city which filled one classroom and had working lights.

Kathryn Bell, headteacher, said: "It’s been great fun and we’ve had parents come in too and some have built houses for the city.

"I have been involved and it’s hard to keep your fingers out of the box of Lego and to then build something.

"We have done a lot of core studies about the community and team building at school.

"They were going to put some lights in to it and decide which ones should be put on as an environmental exercise too."

The structure had to be taken apart at the end of the school day but school staff expect they will have to buy Lego for the youngsters to use again.
