School trip back to medieval times

YOUNGSTERS got a flavour of life in medieval times during a colourful school trip yesterday.

Every pupil from Carnagill Community Primary School, on Catterick Garrison, took part in the visit to Richmond Castle.

Students were invited to come dressed in medieval fantasy costume - with many dressed as knights, dragons and maidens in distress.

They also took part in an authentic banquet and were entertained by minstrels.

Teacher Craig Brown said the trip, which was attended by children aged from three to 11, was designed as a ‘launch event’ to enthuse the youngsters about castles, ahead of classroom-based learning on the same theme, which they will be enjoying in the weeks ahead.

He said: "It has been absolutely fabulous, a wonderful day. Everything went reasonably smoothly, so we are very pleased.

"All the children, from nursery foundation stage, up to year sixes, were involved.

"The idea was to give children an understanding of what a castle is and what it was live to have been alive in the 12th and 13th Centuries."
