COUNCIL MEETS: The annual meeting of Bedale town council will be held tomorrow, at 7pm, in the lounge of Bedale Hall. A new mayor and deputy mayor will be elected. It will be followed, at 7.30pm, by a regular meeting of the council.

HISTORY GROUP: Stokesley Local History Society’s study group is planning a book on the town’s residents and history. It is seeking the loan of photographs to help achieve this. Anyone with images that may be of interest is asked to take them to the town hall, on Thursday, between 11am and 3pm. MEETING POSTPONED: The annual meeting of Northallerton town council has been postponed from tomorrow until the following Monday, May 16, as members do not take office until Tuesday. PLANT SALE: A plant sale will be held at the Edwardian Rock Garden, in Aysgarth, next Saturday and Sunday, to raise funds for a student’s trip to an Indian orphanage. Robert Jauneika, a sixth-form student at the Wensleydale School, is one of 20 students planning the trip. The plant sale will be on between 10am and 4pm on both days. Visitors are asked not to park directly in front of the Rock Garden or neighbouring cottages, but in the lay-by opposite Hamilton’s Tea Room.

HERRIOT PLAY: A play about the life of vet-turned-author Alf Wight will be staged at the World of James Herriot, in Thirsk, on Sunday, May 29, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. RAILWAY WALKS: The Wensleydale Railway is offering guided walks on four dates this month. Starting on Friday, on the 9.50am service from Leeming Bar, with a seven-mile circular walk from Finghall station, to see tulips at Constable Burton. CASTLE TALK: Robert Hillary will give a talk, entitled Raby Castle and the Neville family, at a meeting of Northallerton and District Local History Society, at 7pm, on Tuesday, in Sacred Heart Church, Thirsk Road, Northallerton. BUDGET MEETING: An extra meeting of North Yorkshire County Council’s executive committee will be held at County Hall, Northallerton, at 11am tomorrow. Members will debate the authority’s budget and financial strategy.
