A CARE home threw open its doors to the community when it hosted a summer fair.

The event at Redworth House, on Byerley Road, Shildon, raised £450 for the home’s comfort fund.

Members of staff dressed up as their favourite Disney characters for the Disney-themed event and there was a birds of prey display, courtesy of Ridgeside Falconry, from Kirk Merrington.

Visitors also enjoyed face painting, stalls selling jewellery, cakes and refreshments, a tombola and games.

All the funds raised will be put towards extra treats for residents during the summer months.

Based on Byerley Road, Redworth House provides nursing and residential care for up to 57 residents.

Most of its residents are elderly and include those with dementia but it has a specialist unit on site to accommodate six residents with learning disabilities.

Home manager Joan McNeil said: “Our annual summer fair is an important date in the home’s calendar as it is a fantastic event that brings the community together.

“Residents really enjoy the activities, entertainment and especially like getting to meet and chat to members of our local community.

“We raised a fantastic amount that will be put to great use and we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along.”
