A SCULPTURE inspired by children’s impressions of their home village has been unveiled at a primary school.

Artist Graeme Hopper, from Crook, spent weeks working with youngsters at Tow Law Millennium Primary School before finalising his design for the sculpture.

The striking artwork, made from galvanised mild steel, is full of symbolic objects, including a sunshine representing the school’s logo and a duckling representing a wild duck the children helped rear.

There is also an owl symbolising wisdom, a hedgehog in honour of a friendly creature that lives in the school’s secret garden and wind turbines reflecting Tow Law’s contribution to renewable energy.

Carol Macpherson, higher level teaching assistant at Tow Law Millennium Primary School, said: “As you drive up to the school you are greeted by lots of gates and fences, which are part of school life these days.

“Now as you turn the corner you see a wonderful welcoming sculpture and you cannot help but smile.”

Headteacher Lisa Jackson added: “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Graeme. He is wonderful with the children and always gets the best from them.”
