A NEW pub chain has set up a training academy to help unemployed people forge a career in the hospitality industry.

Businessman Christian Burns, of The Fat Brewer Company in Crook, has teamed up with the Jobcentre Plus and Bishop Auckland College to launch the Fat Brewer Training Academy in the town.

The academy runs British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body approved courses, which cover everything from food hygiene and health and safety, to acquiring a personal licence, marketing skills and managing cellars, casks and kegs

Jobcentre Plus put forward nine unemployed people for the course and the five that were selected have just passed their level two award for personal licence holders with flying colours.

The students, who received employability training from Bishop Auckland College prior to interview, have been taken on by The Fat Brewer Company in areas such as the kitchen, digital media and customer services.

The college also helped the company develop the course and the company is now working with the education provider and Jobcentre Plus to enlist the next cohort of students.

Paul Dolan, senior engagement worker at Bishop Auckland College, said: “This partnership between the college, Jobcentre Plus and The Fat Brewer Company has been an instant success, providing an excellent training opportunity for five unemployed people who now have jobs with an exciting new company.”

Tony Morris, customer experience manager at The Fat Brewer Company, added: “Five weeks ago we met the students for the first time at an open day.

“It has been amazing to watch their development throughout the course, which involved two weeks’ work experience.”

Mr Burns, who owns King’s Bar and Restaurant in Crook, has more than 30 years experience in the hospitality industry.

His latest venture, The Fat Brewer Company, will also see the launch of a new brewery that will produce hand crafted beers to sell through its own pubs and other outlets.

Mr Morris said: “Going forward The Fat Brewer Company will continue to work with Jobcentre Plus and Bishop Auckland College, helping to introduce and develop local unemployed people into the hospitality trade.

“A very exciting future will see The Fat Brewer Company launch new bars which will be designed specifically around the hand crafted ale house concept.

“The bars will have a unique back to basics atmosphere where the patrons will be offered some amazing ales and great customer service within a welcoming environment.”
