GREEN-FINGERED youngsters have been working together to improve their community.

Pupils from St Stephen’s Primary School in Willington and Sunnybrow Primary School have planted thousands of bulbs to ensure the parish is bright and colourful next spring.

Funding from Willington Town Council and Durham County councillors, Joe Buckham and Olwyn Gunn, paid for more than 40,000 crocus and snowdrop bulbs and children had great fun learning how to plant and nurture them.

In Sunny Brow, the children worked alongside the Durham County Council’s Clean and Green team to create a wavy floral design at St John’s Gardens.

The Willington youngsters, meanwhile, teamed up with Parkside Academy pupils, Councillor Buckham, civic pride officers and town council staff to create spring bulb planting pots for the residents of nearby bungalows.

The activities were part of a project by the town and county council, which has also seen the seating area at Willington Crossroads spruced up for residents to enjoy.

The former King George V Garden and the roundabout area near Parkside Academy and Willington Amateur Football Club have also been improved.

Cllr Buckham said “It’s great to deliver something that encourages children to think about looking after where they live and how they can help to make it better.

“Our younger residents are proud of what they’ve achieved and we are looking forward to seeing the end results which should have a big impact on Willington and Sunnybrow in the spring”

Town Mayor, Councillor Fraser Tinsley thanked everyone who had worked together and supported each other across the organisations to make the project a success.
