YOUNG footballers are celebrating after their new teams were given a £700 cheque to buy new equipment.

Two teams of under 8s will benefit from the cash, The Kings and The Aces, from St Mary’s football club in Bishop Auckland.

It is hoped the youngsters will progress through the age groups, and the cash injection will go towards new kits and essential equipment.

West Auckland ward councillors Rob Yorke and Christine Wilson presented the cheque to the teams yesterday (Saturday, November 29) at King James I Academy.

Cllr Yorke said: “It was great to go down to the school and see the 4G pitch which allows the youngsters to train throughout the year.

“The funding came from Councillor Christine Wilson and myself, and is specifically for these two new teams, they needed a broad range of new equipment, from balls to corner flags. It’s surprising how much is needed to set up a new team.

“Football is great, it’s a fantastic sport first and foremost, but it teaches the kids about independence and how to be a team player.

“It also keeps them fit and active, so not only is it good for their health, but it keeps them off the streets, the more kids get involved in sport the better.”
