A COMMUNITY group is reaping the benefits of a new allotment.

The Men’s Cree Project, in Eldon Lane, had a plot on the Dene Valley Community Allotments, in nearby Coronation, but members were left devastated when raw sewage flowed onto the land early this year and made it unfit for purpose.

However, an alternative plot on the site became available and with the help of Northumbrian Water and Lumsden & Carroll, it is now being prepared for growing season next year.

Tony Bird, of the Men’s Cree Project, said: “This allotment is an extension of what the project already offers. It provides opportunities for gardening, woodwork, and even numeracy and drawing skills.

“We have about ten members and a lot of them didn’t think gardening was for them but once they have come down here they change their minds.”

He added: “We must thank Lumsden & Carroll for supplying the new hut and Northumbrian Water for the labour.

“Everyone is absolutely delighted, especially when we thought everything was lost. It really makes a difference and you can see the satisfaction from people.”
