PRIMARY school pupils learning about the Second World War received a special military-themed visit.

Members of Durham Tees Valley Military Vehicle Club and the Northern Second World War Association attended Victoria Lane Academy, in Coundon, last month dressed in 1940s uniforms and civilian dress.

Bob and Pauline Parkins took along one of their wartime military vehicles, a 1945 Jeep and Ray Day took a second Jeep, a 1942 Jeep with a push together motorbike.

Mrs Parkins spoke to the children, who were also dressed in wartime clothes, about food rations, fresh garden vegetables and the idea of “make do and mend”.

John Dale dressed in a regular German police uniform and explained the history of the uniform, the badges and also the role of the German police during the war. In addition, Ian and Pauline Smith took along 1940s newspapers and household items and clothing.

Two veterans, one from the navy and another from the air force also went along to talk to the children.

The packed event was finished with a question and answer session.

Headteacher Jayne Richardson said the children loved the morning so much they could not stop talking about it.
