A RUNNING club is keen to attract 100 athletes to help it to celebrate its centenary parkrun.

Shildon Running and Athletic Club holds a 5km parkrun each Saturday in Hackworth Park, in Shildon, from 9am.

The club, based at the Stadium 2000, on Middridge Lane, in Shildon, aims to hold its 100th parkrun on Saturday, February 14.

It was originally planned to hold the 100th run on Saturday, February 7, but bad weather delayed the 99th event and so the centenary run has been put back a week.

The Shildon runs normally attract 35 athletes each week but club officials hope to see 100 runners take part on February 14.

The runs are not competitive and they are open to both sexes and all ages, although under-11s must be accompanied by an adult.

Neil Wood, secretary of the running club, said: “We are desperately looking forward to the 100th run which will go ahead weather permitting.

“The paths in Hackworth Park were too icy last Saturday to do the 99th run so we had to postpone it for a week in case someone was injured.

“We hope to see 100 people there for the centenary run even though it is on Valentine’s Day.”

Entry is free and athletes from across the country run at Shildon. Runners must register beforehand when they will be given a barcode which they must take to the race.
