MOTORISTS in West Auckland are being warned they will be fined if they continue to flout parking restrictions outside a convenience store.

The plea has been issued after police officers had to deal with numerous issues relating to vehicles being left outside McColl’s, in Front Place, next to the village green.

The road has double yellow lines and speed bumps in place but these are being repeatedly ignored.

Durham Police Chief Constable Mike Barton has visited the site to see for himself the problems being caused and signs warning of fines have also been erected.

Extra patrols are now being planned by officers and action will be taken against anyone not abiding by the rules.

PCSO Lee Blaney, of Bishop Auckland Police Station, said: “We have had a series of complaints about anti-social parking in this location from residents and business owners, even though there are existing measures in place to deter people from doing so.

“We have already taken steps to address the issue; Durham Police Chief Constable Mike Barton has been on a site visit to discuss problem solving techniques with the team; and we’ve placed temporary signs on lampposts and in shops to warn people we will be issuing fines to offenders.

“We have also been out and spoken to store owners, staff and residents to ask them to help us spread the message. Yet the problem persists.

“Our message to people is very clear. If you park your vehicle in this location it is unsafe – that’s why there are restrictions in place.

“We will be running regular patrols of the area over the coming weeks and months and taking action against anyone that is flouting the rules. You have been warned.”

Anyone wishing to report any problems should call Bishop Auckland Police Station on 101.
