AN annual quiz has raised enough money to pay for dozens of hours of medical care in Bishop Auckland.

The Bishop Auckland Civic Society presented a cheque for £827 to the town’s branch of Marie Curie Care today (Tuesday).

Every £20 raised pays for an hour of nursing care for those in need in the Bishop Auckland area.

The society has raised more than £26,000 for various charities from the annual quiz night, which is held in Bishop Auckland Town Hall every December.

Dr Bob McManners, chairman of Bishop Auckland Civic Society, said: “We always look for good charitable causes which have local benefit. We want to make sure it benefits our community rather than going into a big pot.

“Marie Curie is not just about cancer care these days, it is anything that is end of life care.”

Gillian Wales, treasurer of the Bishop Auckland branch of Marie Curie Care, said: “This money will make a big difference. All the money that is donated to us goes into providing care in this area.”

Anyone who is interested in collecting for Marie Curie Care’s daffodil campaign or is willing to volunteer at the Bishop Auckland branch should call Liz Varley on 01388-606075.
