RESIDENTS of a Weardale town looking to resurrecting its once-popular carnival will host a family fun day this summer.

Organisers, led by newly-elected parish councillor Jane Henderson, 53, held a series of events to reignite community spirit and to raise funds to stage the carnival.

Renamed Wolsingham Gala Day, the event will be held at Wolsingham Recreation Grounds on Saturday, July 4, from 11.30am to 4.30pm.

It will include visits from Spiderman and Elsa and Anna from Frozen, inflatables, rides, a Punch and Judy show, a creepy crawlies display, charity stalls and music from Stanhope Silver Band and Jack Drum Arts samba band.

A key feature will be a fancy dress procession on the field with prizes for the winners.

Cllr Henderson said: 'We hope to keep prices of rides and attractions very low, possibly free.

“After all, that is why we have been fundraising for the past year.

“People have been very generous by donating prizes for our events and we want to give something back.

“We hope to release more details soon about local groups appearing and performing at the event, because we want them to be part of this special day.

'We hope that individuals and local will either help us or join in on the day, especially with the dressing up parade.”

The fundraising and build-up continues with an Easter event including egg decorating and bonnet competitions and an egg hunt, at St Anne's Centre, Wolsingham, on Saturday, March 28, from noon.

Cost £1 to enter each competition, donations of tombola prizes and homemade cakes are needed.

The committee also want people to come forward with memorabilia and photos of the original town carnivals and to enlist more volunteers.
