YOUNG people who have gone the extra mile for their community will be celebrated at an awards ceremony this summer.

Bishop Auckland Town Council is now seeking nominations for its annual youth awards, which recognise the achievements of unsung heroes under the age of 20.

Organisers are keen to attract as many entrants as possible. There are no specific categories but the young person should live in the Bishop Auckland area.

It could be someone who cares for friends or family members, a person who has carried out an act of bravery or overcome adversity, a community stalwart, a person living with an illness or someone who is excelling in sport, drama, dance or at school.

Councillor Ann Golightly said: “We want to celebrate young people who are excelling in what they do but have perhaps not got the recognition they deserve.

“We decided to set up the youth awards because a lot of people have a misconception that all youth are bad. We want to showcase all the positive things young people do.”

To make a nomination send the following information to Bishop Auckland Town Council, The Four Clocks Centre, 154a Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, DL14 7EH: Your name and age; the young person’s name, age and contact details; and 200 words on why the young person deserves special recognition.

Nominations can also be sent by email to council@bishopauckland-tc.gov.uk

The deadline for entries is by 5pm on Friday, May 1. The awards ceremony will take place in Bishop Auckland Town Hall in June.
