THERE were some high flying customers at S&A Builders Merchants, in Crook, as the company hosted a public open day with a bungee crane as its main attraction.

More than 50 people took the plunge at the event at the branch, in Prospect Road, which was organised to showcase the newly expanded retail store and products.

The staff spent eight weeks doubling the size of their store and preparing the fun day which also offered activities such as face painting, a bouncy castle, games and food.

Children were also invited to take part in a colouring competition which had categories for youngsters aged six and under and seven to 11 year olds.

Ten members from the Weardale young farmers also took part in the bungee jump to raise money for their club and chosen charities.

Store Manager, Andrew Howard, said: “We wanted to have an open day to show the local people what we have to offer in our newly expanded store, and there’s the added bonus that it gives us the opportunity to throw staff members and customers off a 175ft bungee crane.”

“Some people still think it is just trade but it is trade and retail now so we are still trying to get people to realise that,” he added.

“We have six members of staff and everyone has pulled together to get to where they are so they have worked very hard and put in lots of extra hours.”
