A GROUP of Primary School pupils have won a county wide netball competition after entering for the first time.

The team, from Witton-le-Wear primary school, played a total of eight games before they scooped joint first place with a private school in Durham.

The one day sports event, held at Maiden Castle in Durham, played host to a variety of sports games, including netball, basketball and rugby.

Lynn Docherty, caretaker at Witton-le-Wear primary school said: “The kids used part of their lunch time to practise playing netball and they came in on a Sunday as well.

“They also had a coaching session from Rachel Dauber, a netball coach at Queen Ethelburga’s School in York.”

Sharon Walker, deputy head teacher, added: “For us it was about encouraging the children to enjoy themselves and giving them the opportunity to experience something new, we had no idea that we would win it.

“We are so incredibly proud of them, especially because this was an entirely new experience. We’ve already had pupils asking about next year's games and we are hoping to return.”
