A CANADIAN theatre company is set to give a performance in Stanhope on Friday (April 17).

Theatre Newfoundland Labrador will present With Cruel Times in Between, a lyrical, moving and funny portrait of Newfoundland culture as painted by the rhythmic writings of one of their most beloved poets, Al Pittman.

The play is described as a nostalgic and tender human story of pioneering lives, growing up in an era of tough hardships and strong communities, of childhood lives dominated by the weather and landscape and of being forced to relinquish a way of life in the face of ‘progress’.

The six performers are also descendants of British people who moved to this island in the North Atlantic in the 18th and 19th Centuries and will be drawing on the parallels between life in rural Newfoundland and Cumbria and Durham.

The performance, which will be held at St Thomas Church Hall, is part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme’s Canada Season.

The performance will start at 7.30pm and guests must be aged nine and over.

Tickets cost £8.50 for adults, £7.50 for concessions and £22.50 for a family.
