IT was cakes galore at Shildon yesterday (Saturday, April 25), as hundreds turned out to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Everything from the traditional Victoria Sponge to chocolate rice crispy cakes were donated by the community for the charity bake sale at the Jubilee Fields Community Centre.

It was organised by Heidi Cronin, 32, a Help For Heroes volunteer who said she wanted to raise £500 in what was her first fundraiser for the charity.

The town’s mayor, Henry Nicholson, also showed his support by donating cup cakes and was greeted by the charity mascot, Hero, who was there to pose for pictures.

A Help for Heroes cake was also specially designed for the day.

Ms Cronin, of Shildon, said: “I wanted the local community to come together to make it a really happy event.

“Friends and family have done their part and I’m really pleased because the event has gone so well raising funds.”

She added: “The charity means a lot to me because the boys and lasses have done so much for our country and I don’t think they get enough praise.”

Ms Cronin now plans to host more events for the charity and is already planning a barbecue in August.
