A COUNCILLOR who gave more than £22,000 to help relaunch Bishop Auckland market said it was a key issue when speaking with residents.

Councillor Joy Allen, who covers Bishop Auckland, allocated the money from her Durham County Council neighbourhood budget.

Following a successful trial last November, the first of what is hoped will be regular markets was held on Saturday. (May 9)

It is planned to have stalls stocking a wide range of goods in the market place every Saturday from 9am to 3pm until the end of August.

On the second Saturday of June, July and August it is proposed to hold speciality events alongside the stalls.

Cllr Allen, who helped relaunch the market, said: “These are exciting times for residents and visitors to Bishop Auckland.

“The market relaunch is an example of what can be achieved by working together for the betterment of the town.

“This was a key concern raised by local residents on the door step and I gave a personal pledge to address the issue when I was elected over two-years ago.

“I am delighted to fund and support this market that will hopefully grow and eventually fill the market place. What we need now is for local people to show their support and shop locally and support local businesses in the town.”

There will be a special Halloween market plus a festive one for Christmas over the weekend of November 20 and 22 when the town’s Christmas lights will be switched on.

Support has come from various groups including the South Durham Enterprise Agency and Bishop Auckland Town Team.
