CHILDREN from schools in the Bishop Auckland area put their sporting prowess to the test this week.

Year three pupils from ten primary schools across the town took part in a tennis tournament at Bishop Barrington School, on Woodhouse Lane, on Thursday. (May 14)

The 80 youngsters were invited to take part in the Level 2 Sainsbury’s School Games competition by the Wear Valley and Teesdale School Sports Partnership.

Woodhouse Community Primary School and Cockton Hill Junior School made it to the final of the tournament and Woodhouse emerged victorious on the day.

Woodhouse Community Primary School will now play in the Wear Valley and Teesdale area final and compete for a place in the Level 3 County Durham School Games Finals.

James Oldfield, the school sports partnership’s competitions manager, said, the children really enjoyed the experience.

He added: “It was a very successful day and great to see so many children enjoying tennis and playing at a high level of competition.”

The Sainsbury’s School Games is a Government led awards scheme which aims to inspire children across the country to take part in competitive sport.
