A YOUNG martial artist scooped five medals at a national competition.

Nine-year-old Francesca Cruddas, of Westgate, in Weardale, was also awarded best female competitor of the day at the Liverpool contest, which included adult and black belt competitors.

Francesca, a member of Chung DO Kwan TKD based at Frosterley Village Hall, won two golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Instructor Katey Wallace, 5th Dan, said: “Francesca has done amazingly well.

"She went out there and didn’t let her nerves take hold, she just did what she had trained to do.

"Her attitude is fantastic, she listens, she learns, she’s humble and a true pleasure to teach.

"I am sure this success is only the start for her.”

Other successful club members were: Sara Graham, 15, one gold, two silvers and a bronze; Dan Graham, 13, one gold, one silver; Tony Graham, one silver; Victoria Hay: one gold; Jessie Hay, 12, one gold, two silvers; Katie Rapp, one gold, one bronze; Max Cruddas, 13, one gold, one silver; Ruby Cruddas, seven, one gold, one silver, one bronze.
