"We were locked up for doing something good," say Bishop Auckland teenagers

Connor Roderick and Tyler Thompson Connor Roderick and Tyler Thompson

TWO teenagers who found a five-year-old girl asleep in the back of a stolen car and kept her safe until police arrived told last night of their horror at being arrested and locked up for four hours.

Officers did not believe Tyler Thompson and Connor Roderick’s version of events, and the pair were taken into custody, and had their DNA and fingerprints taken, which will now be stored on a national database.

Their clothes were also kept by police following the incident in St Helen Auckland, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, on Friday, December 9, and the teenagers were only due to get them back yesterday.

Durham Police said officers dealt with the situation using the information they had at the time, and were following procedure.

Tyler, 16, was on his way to buy milk for his grandfather with Connor, 18, at about 10.15pm when they found the abandoned red Skoda Fabia still with the engine running.

It had been stolen from outside the Royal Chef Chinese takeaway in nearby Manor Road.

The driver had left his keys in the ignition while he went into the takeaway, and three youths were spotted driving the car away, shortly after 10pm.

Tyler and Connor recognised the car, so Connor ran off to find the owner, while Tyler, who spotted the girl on the back seat, stayed behind to guard the vehicle.

Connor then brought the police and the girl’s father to the car, but officers failed to believe their story and arrested them.

“We couldn’t believe what was happening,” said Tyler. “We hadn’t done anything wrong. We thought we were doing the right thing but the police just didn’t believe us. We were gutted.

“If we had left that car, I never would have been able to forgive myself if something had happened to that girl.”

Tyler and Connor were held until 3am when they were released without charge.

Tyler, who has taken part in police projects as a member of Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans drama group, added: “We were kept in a cell for doing something good.

We felt like criminals.”

The best friends, who have never been in trouble with the police, said they would now think twice before doing a good thing for fear of getting into trouble.

“We have had strangers coming up in the street asking us why we did it,” said Connor. “Everyone in the village has been talking about it. It has been horrible.”

With the support of their families, Tyler and Connor plan to submit a complaint to police about the incident.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: “Police arrested a man and a youth at the scene of the incident as they matched a description given to police; they were later released without charge.

“The suspects were dealt with as quickly as procedures allow while ensuring that the matter was thoroughly investigated.

“Two other youths have been arrested in connection with this incident and bailed pending further inquiries.”

Any witnesses are asked to call Durham Police on the new nonemergency number 101.

Why am I never suprised at what the plod do these days. Time after time they **** up just to make an arrest, Personally, I do not trust the police any more, they just seem to get nothing right.

This is bad. Very bad.

Two teenagers now joining the many others who were otherwise supportive of the Police, but now will not be.

They should receive a written apology instead of the 'following procedure' rubbish.

More importantly, their fingerprints and DNA profiles should be removed from all Police Databases.

Yes the Police get it very wrong sometimes, how they handle putting things right is how they will be judged.

Makes me think seriously about standing for Crime Commissioner.

A public apology and the removal of information from the database is the least that should be offered to these two individuals.

An abysmal performance by Durham Constabulary, however a written apology to the lads, the immediate removal of their details from the Database, and £50 good will gesture from the Police Funds should suffice by way of recompence

Well done to the two lads they should be praised for their good work. Another example of not all young people are bad but as soon as they do some good this is what happens. I think the police that dealt with this should be suspended from duties while a full investigation is carried out and they should be made to go in front of the tyne tees news and look north cameras and appoligise to the two lads. Shocking lazy policeing thats what i call it

your all clever putting the plod down, but what would YOU have done having the same information ?
the government brought this thing in where, even if innocent, your DNA and tabs would be kept on record.
the police get a bad rap, but who would you call if your car was taken without consent.
plus.....here we go again. which spanner leaves the keys in the car with a kid in anyway ?
grow up and stop pointing the finger. three hours in the cell ? i'd just call it a sleep over !!

"what would YOU have done having the same information ?"
I would have listened to their story, taken into account that THEY called the police and the owner of the vehicle, established that they gave their correct names, then let them go home. If they needed to talk further then the police would know where they were and who they were - no need to arrest them.
.
I agree about people who leave their keys in the car (especially with a child in it) are complete muppets.

Very poor supporting argument doesn't quite cover it.

Police are human, they make mistakes, how they put them right is important. If these two lads sue them, and I wouldn't blame them if they did, it is us, the council taxpayer who ends up footing the bill for shoddy Police practice.

Given these lads called the Police and knew the car owner its hardly logical that they were arrested ... so I think they jumped the gun a bit especially given they now appear on a DNA database etc when they were innocent ... a bit of a violation in my view.

Though saying that it's easy to have a go at the Police; there are plenty of toerags floating around especially in St Helens and West ... you know ... under 18, roaming the streets in the dark, probably chavs or pikeys and the ones that tuck their socks over their tracksuit bottoms ... so probably they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Sue them for false imprisonment turbobox.

Holders of the Office of Constable, regardless of administrative rank, are not above the law despite what you may think. They have resources available to them. They had the opportunity to access the Police National Computer and carry out a person check. This can also be validated against the voter register. They can easily establish a person's identity.
Depriving anyone of their liberty is a serious thing.
Clearly the training of the officers involved is inadequate because they were unable to apply level of common sense here.
The Human Rights Act (1988) exists to protect peoples' liberties. It's not ideal, but the arbitrary denial of freedom and liberty cannot be allowed to happen here in the UK without sanctions against those who seek to do so.

DOH !!!

this has to be established at the time, or as soon as.
as to sue the police, i'm not alone on this distant planet.

they may not be above the law, but let them act within the law. a phone call to the custody officer would be enough to confirm if the officer acted within the law or not. not a panel of family members !!

They should, of course, take advice to see whether they were wrongfully arrested. If they were, then for the benefit of everyone involved, they should sue the police.
.
The only trouble is, if they win the money is paid by the taxpayer, and for the police, as usual, the reality is that it will be water off a duck's back.
.
I wonder if Raoul Moat had not shot PC Rathband but just held him against his will for a few hours, whether the police would have just classed that as a 'sleepover'?

turbobox says...

Dean M says...

He went camping on his own, the state police just turned up to kill him.
.
Anyway, the point is that no-one should be held against their will, not by a member of the public or by the state police, unless there is a lawful reason.
.
I hope these lads take advice and if their arrest was unlawful then they should sue. For all our sakes.
.
And I just hope that other decent people reading about this incident are not put off doing the right thing in similar circumstances.

Someone who doesn't kill anyone, but helps someone who does, ends up getting 40 years because a cop is injured. I hear Moaty's mate is going to the European Court of Justice to get justice and the sentence reduced. I hope he succeeds.
.
I believe, initially, the Yorkshire Ripper got 30 years. For murdering 13 women. None of those girls were cops of course.
.
PC Marwood still not charged over the death of Ian Tomlinson I see. Over two and a half years after his death - nothing.

In this particular case, the cops should publicly apologise for the inconvenience suffered by these 2 lads, and praise them for their actions.
.
Whilst the cops can waffle on all they like about 'following procedure' and '“The suspects were dealt with as quickly as procedures allow..." it would help them to keep public support if they just said sorry and admitted they were wrong. Even if, technically, they were right to 'follow procedure'.

Well said Dean M

In these days of police scrutiny for complains that are ever increasing an apology is very necessary and very important. Why will the police never learn that is in their interest to keep to public on side NOT ostracise them. To get kids to respect the police is an uphill struggle that this will do nothing to help.

The police did the right thing here. As unfortunate as it is for the two lads who didn't do anything wrong we have to think about what if they had and they were let go. Yes they could be questioned at a later date but only if they agreed to it. Due to the nature of the offence then forensic tests need to be carried out to try and link a suspect to the car. Such as fingerprints are needed to try and prove that they drove it or if the window was broken clothing is needed to check for glass. Now the police do not have a power to take fingerprints or seize clothing unless they are taken into custody so I can see exactly why they had to be taken in. They also matched the initial description that was given. If the police hadn't arrested them then they wouldn't have been doing there job and they would no doubt have been getting criticised for allowing the lads to go.

its amazing to read all the comments slagging the cops off i wonder if the same people would be slagging the cops off if they hadnt arrested the pair bearing in mind they matched the description of the offenders and were with the stolen car. yes if pair are innoncent it was regrettable situation but necessary in the circumstances as wrote in news article

Anyhow, why wasn't the bairn in bed at 10pm? Oh, and the two young uns should have been home at that time of night, but fair play tro them. It must have been a wee bit frightening for them.

There is another more fundamental angle here.

All this to save £1,000,000 a year?? Save who??

This is the major problem here. Local Govt cuts that only 'save' money from a budget. But most likely save the country pennies or actually cost more. Those lost jobs will cost more in benefits, free prescription, etc etc it's crazy.

Is there no one out there actually considering this.

The same principles are being practiced in all depts when in fact it'd just one big pot of miss appropriated govt money.

The fact that the majority of people who have commented on this article have done so to abuse the police force saddens me immensley. As usual the police cannot do right for doing wrong. BUT the thing that saddens me the most is that apart from myself in an earlier comment there are only a couple of other people who raised the most important point in this whole situation. WHY DID AN ADULT LEAVE A YOUNG CHILD, ALONE, IN AN UNLOCKED CAR AT 10:00PM? That is the most worrying thing in this whole situation not about what happened to these young men, they are old enough to deal with it and move on.

Yeah, what's it to be, you hate the police or want their help?
Hate is a strong word, I prefer to say No Confidence, Its got a better ring to it.

THE modern policeman. CLUELESS.
POLICE WORK NOW JUST INVOLVES PICKING ON MOTORISTS. NO EFFORT RQUIRED.EVEN WHEN YOU TALK TO THEM THEY SEEM ON ANOTHER PLANET. NO INTEREST IN REAL CRIME. TELL THEM YOU HAVE SEEN A CRIME. REACTION A SHRUG OF THE SHOULDERS.

lloyd lupin its quite obvious from your comments you dont have a clue what the police do. can i suggest that before you make an assumption you first get all the facts.

Yes, and if they got a good kicking and punching in the cells it doesn't look to have left any marks. So they can deal with that too, and let's not question the state police.

Dean M, thank you, you have proved the point I was trying to make. Not an ounce of disgust at the man who left a young child unattended in a car at that time of night. All you can focus on is the police and the 'wrongdoing' of these two young men.

The police knew

-these people had no criminal record

-had rang themselves and the owner of the vehicle

- exactly where to find them if they needed to

If they had nicked the car would they have not left the baby and done a runner

So for their efforts they get locked in a police cell and have their DNA for ever on a police database.

I think I would turn a blind eye in future
