Concert tribute to operatic society stalwart
AN amateur variety company is to pay a musical tribute to one of its much-loved members.
Margaret Umpleby, left, who died in November last year, was a founder member of the Northallerton Operatic Society and took part in their first production, The Gondoliers, in 1954.
It was there she met her husband, Tom. She leaves behind three daughters and a son.
She joined the Northallerton Variety Company in 1982 and directed pantomimes for the next 18 years. Under her guidance, the company raised thousands of pounds for local charities.
She also directed the Variety Company Concert Group.
"She was a very special lady and a very hard act to follow," said the company's secretary, Maureen Willoughby.
The concert, Thanks for the Memory, will be staged in Northallerton town hall at 7.30pm on July 12. It will consist of songs from the shows Mrs Umpleby loved or took part in and the proceeds will go to Marie Curie and Hospice Homecare, who cared for her during her illness.
Tickets are £8, which includes a glass of wine, and they are available by contacting 01609-770936.
