I RECENTLY had the misfortune of needing to post a letter so I had to go to my local supermarket to purchase a stamp.

Upon arrival at the counter I was told that they sold stamps in books of 12 only. The lady told me that the Post Office had not supplied Asda with any smaller denominations for at least six months.

The cost of a book was £7.20.

The Royal Mail should be ashamed of this tactic.

Pensioners and jobseekers cannot afford to pay £7.20 to post birthday cards to grandchildren or job applications etc.

Is it possible to use other means of posting a letter or is it, as I suspect, a monopoly run by cash hungry businessmen?

We should make a stand against this cruelty to wallets and purses.

Does anybody agree?

Phil Lambert, Darlington.
