DAVID NEWELL, director of The Newspaper Society, asked where next for papers after the Leveson inquiry (Echo, Oct 30).
He claimed that “substantially less than one per cent of newspapers” were involved in abusive practice.
Operation Motorman pointed to wide scale abuse of private data within Fleet Street. The abusers were was not just News International publications.
If Mr Newell is trying to argue that every free sheet and local paper counts the same as a national paper then his statement might just be true, but, if that is your approach, I shall continue to believe Private Eye on this issue well before I put faith in The Northern Echo D Meikel, Chesterfield.
