IN France the government is in a terrible quandary about a new tax on those earning over 1 million euros per year.

At the same time the Americans are in imminent danger of falling off their fiscal cliff while trying to save their poor high earners from a similar fate.

We in Britain are not even considering such a hike in tax.

Indeed, we are reducing the highest levels of tax for the super rich. Doesn’t it make your heart glad?

I find myself asking how these people manage to “earn” over a £1m a year in the first place.

Do they single-handedly resurface miles of road per day?

Are they able to drive a dozen trains, serve 20 queues of shoppers simultaneously or put together a dozen cars per hour? I doubt it.

It is far more likely that they direct others to do real work while they dwell in a nice warm office.
