REGARDING the news that a squadron of RAF Typhoon jets is to fly east in a show of strength against further Russian aggression in Ukraine (Echo, Apr 17).

It costs the RAF £3,875 an hour to fly just one of these aircraft.

The Ukraine would appear to be a country split down the middle with many Russians living there. To me it’s a case of here we go again getting involved with a country’s internal dispute on the say so of Nato.

Two days later, The Northern Echo carried a story about children in our region going to school hungry and wearing dirty clothes (Echo, Apr 19). And yet we can once again afford to spend money in foreign countries.

It is time this county put its own people first and the rest look after themselves.
