I READ about the destruction of five trees in Thirsk Market Place (Echo, Apr 19) with rising incredulity.

Councillor Mark Robson, the leader of Hambleton District Council, is quoted as saying that the trees had to be removed because they were a threat to public health and safety and he did not have to consult the town council because it is district council-owned land.

In fact, the tree roots are not making the stone flagging unsafe, as a quick visual inspection will show.

Yes, there were bird droppings but that, again, could be easily dealt with.

Hambleton’s completely wrong, draconian and short-term solution has denied shade to the public and visually damaged the square in the longer term. It is adding insult to injury for Coun Robson now to offer consultation after the event.

In fact, what is needed in that part of the square is removal of grease falling from fish-and-chip papers onto the flags which is both unsightly and a potential health hazard.

What will be done about that?
