I HAVE just learned of the vandalised Great War memorial at Tursdale Cottages, in County Durham.

I was born before the Second World War.

I can still remember the brave men who went to war and fought for King and country.

The war memorial was built at Tursdale in honour of the brave men who lost their lives.

The people who have vandalised it will have no idea of the suffering we had to endure and the hardship of the wives of the brave soldiers who never returned home.

Back then I think we had more respect than the children of today. I can still remember the food rationing and the sweet coupons. Did we complain? No, we lived our life and never grumbled.

My only hope is that those bad old days are behind us and will never return.
