GATESHEAD are to take action after suffering their fourth postponement at the International Stadium in recent weeks.

The Heed were not in action at the weekend as their game at home to Nuneaton was postponed on Friday due to a waterlogged pitch.

A goal area at the south end of the ground has proven particularly troublesome so will be returfed following Saturday’s FA Trophy third round tie against Barrow.

Chairman Graham Wood said: “During the last close season the already excellent playing surface was removed, the pitch laser levelled and the drainage and irrigation systems upgraded before returfing throughout.

“Regrettably, the new turf and the preparation immediately below is currently acting as a cap which is slowing the flow rate of rain water to the drains.

“A remedial programme to maximise the condition of the playing surface for the remainder of the current season will commence immediately following Saturday’s FA Trophy match with Barrow, weather permitting.

“The worst affected areas of the playing surface will be re-turfed and the addition of sands bands throughout the entire pitch to assist with the flow of surface water to the drains will be considered in consultation with independent advisors.

“During next close season, further remedial work including scarifying and aeration treatments will be carried out with the objective of achieving the original aim of creating a playing surface of the highest standard.”

Tomorrow evening Gateshead are due to host league leaders Grimsby Town.
